So, I've officially been on a set now and um.. I hope if I ever do direct something it's a lot better then what I had to deal with, to not break my imaginary NDA, I won't tell anything too personal but, it was probally the roughtest set I've ever had to work for. The director hae the idea to do an entire improv shoot, including things that really should've been written down. to add to that it was his first time directing, and after he studied nothing to do with this so, he just coached the actors but left very little for me (grip) and the DP he (IMO) paid far too much for her skill level, but that's also on him as she was a last minute hire so he didn't look up her previous prodjects and instead trusted her Instagram.
Really the only thing that this experience has brought me is the feeling that I am actually more profestional then I thought I was. If you've notice my tiny about me section change again, yes I am heading to film school, one of the many in Toronto in fact. (I forget if I've mentioned it) so it was nice to see I won't be going into debt for nothing. then again I was only a grip and thrown onto audio (ew) so it's not like I could fuck up, but wow did our director really not know what was going on. He brought on everyone at once so we didn't have anywhere to put our stuff when we were rolling so the backgrounds look like a mess. He'd only give vauge ideas on who the characters were which doesn't help the prementioned fact it was all done improved, and he asked me why did the DP want to know how he wanted the shot set up; this caused the biggest pain in the ass as right now I'm also editing this thing, and I keep mentioning shots that should've been so obvious to me (a film student) that we didn't get because he (an Acting school graduate) didn't get . I feel like if you have even an small understanding on how films are created, you should know if someone is talking you should have a shot to their face.
He's chalked it up just to it being his first film but buddy, the films I did with my first year class at my previous college understood these facts, and also... you had made two shorts before this? (both of which I have been a part of) I think he was just to over zelous with his plans, he wanted to make this a full feature film, which I kept droning in his head thagt all the books I am reading, tells you not to do this, studio binder tells you not to do this, how to save a cat tells you not to do this. *sigh*
To stop ragging on him for a little bit (but not really as I'm writing it with him in mind as the lead character) I've been writing a few scripts just to get my writing back on track as I feel like after I left school my writings has also taking a slug turn. (Which is also slowing down my updates to my site :( ) It's kind of a sequel-ish, to his short film Coffee Time (my first real film outside high school, albeit as a grip)
I've always just wanted to write a short film that was based on his character because I find it so intrestingly one dimentional, Stan is flat and he's very one sided when he comes to the argument he tries to make in the film, that cancel culture is going to far and we should just learn to learn from the past, such as the main plot point of the film Blazing Saduls, and while I do agree with that cancel culture has gone to far. Stan kind of demains this point instead of arguees it (like a lot of Gen Xs)
It's very similar to how the director thinks IRL, however instead of him shuting down when you try to debate him on why they had to change Carls voice in The Simpsons, and in fact they even made a whole episode on it (totally recommend this video by ToonrificTariq on it BTW) the debait finshes as soon as he says his lines, like if they're powerful or something.
Hense why I've been writing the script, now I don't know how yet I want to frame this film, as I have the same amount of budget as a canadian penny, so it's not something I want to do just yet, I still want to write this character from the angle of this character who thinks he's talking high and mighty of himself and preaching to the choir, when he's really just being stuborn.
I think I might go with him being a power fantasy director? yeah, maybe I'll go with that.
